Farmers Donate Fresh Food To Patients

Farmers helped the non- profit organization in supporting healthier community by donating fresh, healthy food to sick people who are in need of nutritious meals, CBS Boston reported.

On Wednesday, Community Servings in Jamaica Plain received a truckload of fresh vegetables, including tomatoes, peppers, zucchini and eggplants from the Community Harvest Farm in North Grafton.

With the help of numerous volunteers, Community Servings has prepared and delivered healthy meals to individuals and families who are too sick to make their own meal.

Christopher Muhammad, Operations Director for Community Servings said, "Everything from breast cancer, Lou Gehrig's disease and hospice care." The organization includes everyone.

During the harvest time, backyard gardeners and farmers alike provide a bountiful supply of fresh vegetables to the non-profit organization.

Muhammad explained, "It's extras. It's seconds. It's uglies, what they refer to as uglies. There's nothing wrong with it, but we've gotten so acclimated at the supermarket that everything has to be perfect, that many times they won't take it unless it looks perfect."

The organization provides healthy meals for 1500 people in communities.

"We're getting produce that was picked the day before, we process it the day we get it or the next day, we make meals out of it right away and it goes to our clients," Muhammad said.

Community Servings is a non profit organization that provides nutritious meals to people suffering from all kinds of disabilities. They "prepare and deliver 9,600 lunches and dinners each week to the homes of almost 920 individuals and families who are homebound with an acute life-threatening illness," as their website stated.

As for the Community Servings program, it's not just about providing food to the seriously ill people but also about giving encouragement and hope. Along with the organization's food delivery is a message that reminds the sick people "that they are not alone in their struggle with life-threatening illness."
