Subway to use Softcard for Mobile Payments

Subway has partnered with Softcard to ensure that customers can pay through their mobile phones for a bite of their favorite Subway sandwich. The sandwich restaurant has announced that through Softcard branded NFC terminals spread out in 26,000 locations countrywide, sandwich fans will now find it easier to pay for their bread and veggie delight.

On September 16, Subway announced that it would launch NFC based mobile payments starting October. The payment mode will be made possible with Softcard, the mobile commerce joint venture between telecommunications companies AT&T Mobility, Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile USA. This is one of the largest deployments of the mobile phone payment service in the U.S.

The two partners are also extending offers onto their customers. Through the Softcard app. Customers who tap and pay at Subway restaurants will receive a $1 refund back on every purchase that is over $1 and was made with the American Express Serve card. The promotion will run all year.

In the months following the announcement, Subway will begin including the Subway Card Reward Program into the Softcard app and complete the process before the October commencement date. Customers using the Softcard app will now have a simpler way of collecting their reward points.

The pilot program was launched in 2013 in Salt Lake City. After its successful debut, the program is now being extended to other Subway locations nationwide.

IPhone 6 users will also be able to tap into Apple Pay to use the new system. Subway restaurants will work with NFC enabled iPhones using Apple Pay as from the date of the program on October 1st.

The Softcard - Subway partnership began in 2013 and will see the sandwich restaurant partner in more endeavors in telecommunications. "Softcard has proven to be a valuable partner to us and we are proud to extend our relationship with them," Carman Wenkoff, Subway's Chief Information Officer, said in a recent statement.
