Since 'Madam Secretary' is the sister show of Julianna Margulies's 'The Good Wife,' it is not surprising that the new fall series tackles similar issues found in the returning hit legal drama. Actress Tea Leoni is playing the titular role named Elizabeth McCord, who is struggling to find her place at the White House despite being the newly appointed secretary of the state. McCord is a CIA analyst turned academic at the request of the president played by Keith Carradine, following the mysterious death of the previous secretary. Meanwhile, prior to the show's premiere, many critics have already tagged it as something that will basically tackle and feature the life and the works of Hillary Clinton, but the creative team behind 'Madam Secretary' claims that it isn't. "We're not making a documentary about Hillary Clinton," said actor Tim Daly. "We're not trying to support her supposed run for [the] presidency." Series creator and writer Barbara Hall even explained that the inspiration behind McCord was broader and more ranging than the currently possible presidential candidate. Don't miss tonight's episode. The official synopsis of 'Madam Secretary' season 1 episode 1 reads: "Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord is immediately faced with a maelstrom of complex political challenges, and an international hostage situation is her top priority. Meanwhile at home, Elizabeth questions whether she did the right thing by taking this job, as her children are finding it difficult to adjust to their new schools."

On the other hand, the official show summary from CBS reads: "Madam Secretary stars Téa Leoni as Elizabeth McCord, the shrewd, determined, newly appointed Secretary of State who drives international diplomacy, battles office politics and circumvents protocol as she negotiates global and domestic issues, both at the White House and at home. A college professor and a brilliant former CIA analyst who left for ethical reasons, Elizabeth returns to public life at the request of the President following the suspicious death of her predecessor. The President values her apolitical leanings, her deep knowledge of the Middle East, her flair for languages and her ability to not just think outside the box, but to not even acknowledge there is a box."

'Madam Secretary' stars Leoni, Daly, Carradine, Bebe Neuwirth, Patina Miller, Geoffrey Arend, Zeljko Ivanek and Katherine Herzer, among others.
