Putting an End to Bad Coffee

Have you ever fallen prey of sipping bad coffee?

If yes, it's time that you make your own coffee by mastering both the art and science of aerating your coffee!  That's right, you can start by infusing air to your favorite cup of coffee.   Aerating, or introducing air to the coffee gives smoothness and rounds out the bitterness of the coffee, making for a smoother, creamier cup.

In principle, The Roasterie explains that aerating your coffee is just like aerating wine-except that in taking your coffee, your mouth is the decanter. Aerating also allows your nose to get in on the action. Aeration allows coffee aromas to pass by the soft palate and travel up into your nose. When inside your nose, aromas interact with your nasal receptors. The information from your nose and tongue are then sent to the brain. From there, your brain acts like a super-computer and deciphers the signals to create what we perceive as taste.

Element Coffee's young and famous barista Ferris McIntyre is quoted to recommend aerating coffee when she said that "the entire purpose of the pour-over is to showcase the freshness of the coffee."

Pour-over is the hot new trend that's actually an old-school method of making coffee. In simplest terms, it's pouring hot water over coffee grounds, but there's definitely a technique to extracting all the nuanced flavors from the beans.

SOME TIPS TO AERATE YOUR COFFEE RIGHT!

  • Give the coffee time to bloom and allow the oils to perk a little bit.
  • You only need a cone to house the coffee and filter and a coffee cup.
  • Wet the filter with water between 200° and 205°. "Any hotter than that and you'll burn the coffee. It won't taste as good.
  • Add freshly ground coffee.
  • Pour a little hot water over the ground coffee in a circular motion.  Don't use too much water.  Use enough water to evenly moisten the ground coffee to produce a rich flavor.
  • Pour more water slowly and directly over the top and middle of the ground.  Pouring over the sides seeps right through and doesn't filter the grounds.  The water will release the coffee's carbon and it will add sweetness to your coffee.
  • Wait for a few minutes if your coffee is too hot as it will take minutes for the water through the ground coffee.  Allow your coffee to aerate to allow more sweetness and flavor to penetrate while cooling off.

Now that you have successfully followed these simple tips, you can now enjoy sipping your freshly aerated cup of coffee and say goodbye to bad coffee!
