5 Foods You Must Consume to Fight Against GERD

Many people suffer from acid reflux, which is brought on by several kinds of acidic food heand can progress to a more severe condition known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). If you have GERD, you may experience chest pain, coughing, and difficulty swallowing, particularly when lying down. Since you are less likely to overeat, which is one of the factors that may lead to heartburn, this is a positive development. 

Oatmeal, in particular, is capable of absorbing acid from the stomach. Additionally, other options are high in fiber, such as brown rice, whole-grain bread, and quinoa, as well as green vegetables, such as broccoli, asparagus, and Brussels sprouts. However, remember that fiber cannot be adequate unless sufficient fluid is in your diet; therefore, you must consume much water.  

2. Salmon

Fish has omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial to the heart. Choosing this pinkish fish and other lean proteins like chicken and turkey is always a good idea. Salmon is a simple food to digest and does not remain in your stomach for an extended period, which lowers the likelihood that you may experience acid reflux. 

As an alternative to frying, consider baking, broiling, or grilling the chicken or turkey instead of frying it, but ensure that you remove the fatty skin in advance. Thus, instead of using spices, you can add flavor by using herbs such as parsley and basil if you find that spices make your stomach uncomfortable.

3. Water

When it comes to beverages, water is your best option if you suffer from acid reflux or GERD. Drinks that are high in sugar, as well as alcoholic beverages and juices that are acidic, can aggravate this kind of problem. Also, carbonated drinks might contribute to your gas and cause you to burp, making the situation much more difficult. Therefore, pH-balanced drinks such as water are the best drinks to consume.

5. Bananas

Those who suffer from GERD should also consume bananas. Bananas are included in the diet that is commonly referred to as the bland diet. Accordingly, foods low in acid are included in the bland diet, recommended for individuals experiencing trouble with their gastrointestinal (GI) system. 

By reducing the amount of acid produced by the stomach, foods that are low in acid or high in alkaline may help alleviate the symptoms of GERD. Bananas also contain pectin, a type of soluble fiber that facilitates the movement of food particles through the digestive system.
