The One Thing Bullies and the Bullied Have in Common

Bullies are people we would never think of as victims, however we also can't deny the fact that like the bullied, bullies are also fighting their own battle. Health experts have already proven after years of research and studies that these people who result to aggression and project their anger towards other people have their own unsolved issues.

A study that was done in New York shed some light on those children to result to bullying. The researchers of the study were able to figure out that the children who tend to bully have higher chances of developing an eating disorder. This study was published in the International Journal of Eating Disorder, through the joint efforts of the Duke Medicine and the University Of North Carolina School Of Medicine.

The lead author of the study, William Copeland from the Duke University School of Medicine explained that for a while, there has always been a concept of how bullies are. They are those kids who are more hale and energetic, maybe because they are capable of controlling certain situations or just really good at finding ways to get out of trouble. However, there is one area these children can't seem to get out of. The research involved 1,420 children who were divided into 4 groups: the bullies, the bullied, the occasionally bullied and the not bullied at all.

The study showed that the ones who bully other kids have twice the tendency to develop eating disorders like, bulimia, binge eating and anorexia than their victims. The study also showed results that the eating disorders developed by these bullies may be a result from the guilt and anger which may lead them to eat so much then get rid of what they have eaten or engage themselves in very vigorous activities or exercises.

It was also revealed that both the bullied and the bullies are at risk of eating disorders. In fact, it was discovered that those are involved in bullying have 22.8% risk of developing these disorders compared to the 5.6% of those who are not involved at all.
