Search for Escaped New York Convicts Intensified

The search for the escaped convicts from Clinton Correctional Facility intensifies, when bloodhounds picked up a strong scent which suggests that the escapees are near by. A stretch of State Route 374 - nearly eight miles long - remains closed this morning, and residents can expect an increased police presence in the area, according to a police news release. In addition, Saranac Central School District is closed today, with Superintendent of Schools Johnathan Parks wanting to "get out law enforcement's way" as the search continues for David Sweat and Richard Matt, he told ABC News.

    A 72-year-old man from Port Arthur, Texas, died inside his dream car when the lock system malfunctioned and he was trapped inside his 2007 Corvette with his dog, Leia. James Rogers and his dog, Leia both died from heat exhaustion earlier this week. The man and the dog were apparently headed towards a waffle house in Port Arthur were he frequented. Police believe a cable came loose and cut off the power to the car when he and the dog were inside, rendering him unable to open the doors, lower the windows or honk the horn. He couldn't call for help because he left his phone in the Waffle House, but still made what was described as "a valiant attempt to escape." Emergency crews who arrived struggled to get him out as well and eventually had to break a window, but it was too late.

    Germanwings co-pilot Andreas Lubitz feared he was going blind and may have been unfit to fly before he crashed a passenger jet into a French mountainside in March. The doctors didn't report their concerns to Andreas Lubitz's employers, however, because of German patient privacy laws, Marseille Prosecutor Brice Robin told reporters in Paris. Robin met with families of victims Thursday and updated reporters on the status of the investigation into the March 24 crash, which killed all 150 people aboard. Families are just starting to receive remains of their loved ones and will start holding burials in the coming days and weeks. Robin said the investigation so far "has enabled us to confirm without a shadow of a doubt.

Timothy Hawkins said he expects his daughter, who is "very sorry", to plead guilty in court on Monday. Malaysian officials said she could be charged with causing public nuisance. Miss Hawkins, who was head girl at independent Ockbrook School, will be sentenced straight away and could face three months' imprisonment or a fine, her father said.

    Police investigators believe that Joyce Mitchell, an employee at Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York, was involed in the escape of two convicts. The convicts, David Sweat, 34 years old, and Richard Matt, 48 years old, escaped Clinton Correctional Facility with the use of power tools they got from the Prison itself. David Sweat, and Richard W. Matt, were both serving long sentences for commited murder. Matt was convicted and sentenced for 25 years to life, for the kidnapping and death of a man in 1997, while Sweat and an unknown accomplice killed a deputy Sheriff in 2002 by shooting him more than a dozen times and was sentenced to life imprisonment without chance of parole. Gov. Andrew Cuomo of the state of New York is offering a $100,000 reward for any valid information leading to the whereabouts of the two convicts. Prison guards discovered the inmates beds inside the prison were stuffed with clothes to serve as decoys for the escaped convicts in an attempt to fool the guards doing their rounds. Matt and Sweat apparently used power tools to escape the Prison.
