2014 Chevrolet Corvette: New Logo and All-New Design Require Temporary Closure of GM Plant in Kentucky

With a new logo and an completely revamped design, the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette will make its debut on January 13, 2013. It is the seventh generation of the legendary American sports car over the last six decades. General Motors announced to temporarily halt the production a Kentucky plant, the only GM site that builds Corvettes.

For six months, the plant will be retooled and employees retrained, and there might be temporary lay-offs as well. But "if there are periods of time that our people will be off, it will be a matter of days, not a matter of months," Plant manager Dave Tatman said.

Previously, GM retooled plants while the production continued, but since scope of the redesign of the 2014 Corvette goes far beyond other redesigns, it wasn't feasible in Kentucky.

"With this car, because it's such a dramatic change, we felt like the best thing to do was to halt production so we could completely overhaul the interior of (the) Bowling Green (plant) to get ready for the new car," GM spokesman Monte Doran said.

Meanwhile, also the new logo was presented, the Crossed Flags having a more angular and swept appearance. "The flags are much more modern, more technical and more detailed than before - underscoring the comprehensive redesign of the entire car," Ed Welburn, GM vice president of global design said.
