China Kindergarten Poisoning Leaves Two Students Dead and 30 More Ill

China's food security problems continue to grow after a mass poisoning at a kindergarten in southwestern China killed two students and left another 30 sick.

According to the Associated Press, investigators have identified the toxic substance as rat poison, a type that has been banned due to its threat to human health but remains in circulation. Food served at the school, the Jiajia Kindergarten, was tested and results found it to be safe.

A statement from the provincial government noted that authorities are scrambling to find out how the kids ingested the poison Wednesday in the kindergarten in Yunnan province's rural Qiubei County.

Out of the 30 sickened kids, ages four and five, only six remained hospitalized and the others were discharged from hospital. Two girls, aged four and five, passed away from the poisoning. Whether the poisoning was accidental or intentional was not clear.

State broadcaster CCTV reported that the Jiajia kindergarten in Yunnan province's rural Qiubei County had begun accepting students last year despite not being fully licensed as an educational institution for children.

According to MSN today Chinese schools have had many problems lately. There have been a series of "mass stabbing and other attacks" by those suffering from mental health problems and others who have been harboring grudges. Several incidents occur where school staff administered medication to children without authorization.
