McDonald's Launches Happy Goggles: Happy Meal Box Goes Digital With Virtual Reality Headsets

Looks like food and technology make a good match.

That is proven by McDonald's with their newest promotional stint in Sweden that turns their Happy Meal boxes into virtual reality viewers.

Yep, you read that right.

The "Happy Goggles", will be available in 14 restaurants across the country during the weekends between March 5 and March 12. A total of 3,500 Happy Goggles will be distributed, all in all, priced at about $4.10 each.

The company believes that this move is "a really exciting opportunity to connect families in digital times," Jeff Jackett, marketing director at McDonald's Sweden, tells AdWeek.

In accordance with the Swedish recreational holiday known as the "Sporlov", McDonald's followed the theme of skiing which is what the famous holiday is all about. The fast food giant has installed a game called "Slope Stars", which is a virtual reality game that can be experienced with the happy meal boxes, but works well as with regular mobile virtual reality device.

"Parents can learn more about their children's knowledge and experience of the digital world. And purposeful gaming can also be a great joint activity that helps families interact on equal terms," Jackett said.

The Happy Meal Boxes could be easily transformed to the Happy Goggles by just simply tearing the dotted lines and folding. The Virtual Reality lenses, which comes with the happy meal, should be inserted inside the folded box too.

Of course, a simply folded box will not do all the magic. You will need your smartphone as well.

AdWeek reports that DDB Stockholm developed the strategy, design and packaging, while North Kingdom Stockholm created the game; Prime is handling publicity.

Jackett also announced that McDonald's and VR lovers all over the world can look forward to the global introduction of the product, if it goes well in Sweeden, which is their "first trial run globally".
