New Company Can Tell You Exactly What's In Your Food

Want an easy way to know what's in your food? This new start-up may have the answer. The company in question is called Clear Labs, a food analytics group that is using genomic data to find out what exactly is in the food you're eating.

Clear Labs was founded in 2013 by a group of software engineers and genomic scientists to index the world's food supply and set worldwide standards for food integrity. We are pioneering food analytics with our flagship product, Clear View so that the world's most respected food brands can differentiate on quality and stand behind their value.

In an interview with TechCrunch, co-founder Mahni Ghorashi says Clear Labs' goal is to be the 'Google of food'.

"Our aim is really to build this comprehensive database upon which we can make food indexable, searchable and with all the types of genetic analytics you can run on top of that."

Their flagship product is called 'Clear View', a service that analyzes food and other ingredients at the molecular level to provide clients with comprehensive information.

Prospective customers can send samples of whatever food item they want tested to Clear Labs. It will then undergo rigorous testing to determine the exact composition.

"Traditional food testing methods require you to know what it is you're looking for prior to testing and is limited to one component per test." Said CEO Sasan Amini to GigaOM. This service changes that.

The US Food and Drug Administration is facing considerable pressure over food packaging and labelling laws. Services like Clear View will now doubt allow food companies and retailers to label their products more accurately.

The company has already raised $6.5 million in Series A funding from VCs like Khosla Ventures, Felicis, and Passport Capital.
