Master of None Creators Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang Answer Fans in Reddit AMA

Netflix's new comedy Master of None has been the most buzzed about TV show recently. The show, which stars comedian Aziz Ansari as a 30 year-old actor trying to find life and love in New York City, has won a considerable amount of praise from critics for its smart, funny, and often poignant take on serious issues.

Ansari together with his co-creator Alan Yang recently took part in an ask-me-anything session on Reddit to answer some of the fans' questions.

One of the most talked about aspects of the show, was the decision to cast Ansari's mom and dad as the on-screen parents of his character Dev. One episode in particular, puts Mr and Mrs. Ansari front and center as it explores the struggles they had to face as immigrants coming to America.

In the AMA, Ansari says a lot of the material used in that segment was drawn from his parents' real life experiences.

"Did the doctors actually treat new doctors to a steak dinner, but they decided they didn't want to have dinner with an Indian immigrant? Is that actually what happened to your dad?" asked reddit user Babushka5.

Ansari replied saying, "Yes this really happened to my dad, they told him to eat in the cafeteria."

Master of None's unique visual look was also discussed. The show makes use of a cinematic aspect ratio not normally seen in comedies.

Ansari says they made the choice because, "from the beginning, we wanted it to feel less like most of the single camera comedies that are out there and more like a loose, personal, realistic comedy from the 70's. A big part of that was the look of the show."
