Corn Oil-Heavy Diets Lead To Pre-Diabetic Symptoms And Exhaustion

A recent study that used mice for sample shows that people who enjoy corn oil-heavy diets could suffer from exhaustion and pre-diabetic symptoms.

The study has been running for less than two months now and the mice were also compared to the other group of mice who were given diet rich in olive oil. This group is still active and healthy says the researchers from the University of British Columbia.

According to biologist Sanjoy Ghosh, the group fed with corn oil has developed insulin resistance as well as impaired glucose disposal. They are also no longer that active in physical tasks.

"We found that glucose disposal was delayed in corn oil fed mice compared to olive oil fed mice, which essentially means that corn oil fed mice became pre-diabetic within six weeks," Sanjoy Gosh said in a statement.

Basically, the group that consumed diet with more corn oil derived 40 percent of their calories from the said type of oil. In comparison, North Americans are getting around 32 to 34 percent of calories from fat. However, one in these five Americans exceeds 44 percent and it is deemed to be dangerous for one's health.

The said research was published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry and it claims that vegetable oils that have Omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids can lead to negative effects. There are also cases where too much consumption of the said oil can lead to cardiac and inflammatory diseases as well as metabolic illnesses.

Also, other studies claim that it can lead to depression in humans since there is a reduced physical activity making it difficult for them to socialize. "Loss of physical activity and development of insulin resistance under a high-fat diet, as performed in this study, is well established in humans," Sanjoy Gosh added.

Gosh also explains that there have been other detrimental effects of the corn oil but their study focuses on the link of the oil and the physical inactivity of people.
