Dangerous Gut Microbe: Infections Associated With It Remain on the Rise

A potentially serious gastrointestinal infection is more usual than the previously estimated. It was reported by the national officials last Wednesday. According to West Virginia Public Broadcasting, this infection is triggered by a dangerous gut microbe called Clostridium difficile or simply C-diff. It causes almost 500,000 diseases in US every year and it puts into death roughly 29,000, as stated by the national centers for illness control & prevention.

The estimation, according to the analysis made on the gathered data at ten geographic regions in year 2011 is pretty higher as compared to last year. It is what the CDC officials stated and these people were the ones who released the information in the New England Journal of Medicine. The latest estimate underscores the growing issue among physicians as well as health officials regarding the dangerous gut microbe.

This bacterium produces a harmfully powerful toxin which causes dreadful diarrhea and it is typically hard to cure, in part for the reason that most of these infections are triggered by the bacteria's strains which turned to be resistant to so called standard antibiotics. There are few patients who ended up having the need to undergo a surgery to remove a certain portion of their colon so that the dangerous gut microbe will be finally eradicated. Even in these cases, the infection often recurs for several times and that could be seriously debilitating and fatal in the end.

According to NPR, Michael Bell said that it is a serious illness which can trigger tremendous suffering or death. Bell is the deputy manager of the Department of Healthcare Quality Promotion of CDC at the Federal Center for Zoonotic and Emerging Infectious Diseases. He emphasized that the latest numbers highlight the need for using antibiotics more cautiously. The intake of drugs could upset the bacteria's normal balance in the digestive tract of a person, permitting the dangerous gut microbe to reproduce in other cases. Studies show that infections associated with dangerous gut microbe usually occur following the administration of antibiotics for certain reasons.
