How Weed Keeps You Skinny: What Researchers Say About Marijuana, Weight, and Diabetes

Marijuana is already making a name for its health benefits. May it be medicinal or recreational; studies revealed that smoking pot does aid one's wellness. Recent studies emerged that Marijuana helps reduce weight and control blood sugar, lowering chances of both obesity and diabetes. Being a cannabis user does have its perks.

As per The Stoner's Cookbook, Numerous researches from the University of Nebraska, The Harvard School of Public Health and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center recently revealed that marijuana smoking individuals does have smaller waistlines compared to their non-smoking peers. A study that was published in 2011 from the American Journal of Epidemiology surveyed over 52,000 participants and has concluded that rates of obesity are lower about one third lower among cannabis users.

A study that was published last 2014, regular cannabis users were said to have increased levels of High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol [HDL-C known as the good cholesterol] and slightly lower levels of Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol [LDL-C bad cholesterol]. This studies measured data from over 700 members of Canada's Inuit community.

 Marijuana is also said to aid in jump starting an individual's metabolism. The active component of cannabis aids in metabolism to overdrive. THC or also known as Tetrahydrocannabinol is said to stimulate the production of a hormone called ghrelin. Ghrelin is known as a potent appetite stimulator, due to its potency it's often called as the "hunger hormone." Though this may be known to induce hunger, the little hormone also plays a vital role in helping an individual's body to break down and metabolize carbohydrates. Though weed may give you munchies, it aids the body to break down the carbs as well.

Numerous studies have emerged that that regular marijuana users had fasting insulin levels up to 16% lower than their non-smoking peers.
