Gusto Packing Recalls Over 67,000 Pounds Sliced, Spiral Ham Due to Possible Listeria Contamination

Gusto Packing has recalled over 67,000 pounds of sliced, spiral ham products due to possible listeria.

According to the Associated Press, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Saturday, that the company recalled 67,110 pounds of ham. Officials discovered that some of its products tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.

The products were reportedly "frozen and held for reconditioning." Gusto Packing stated that some of the products were unintentionally shipped into commerce. The Montgomery, Ill., based company reportedly shipped its products were shipped to wholesalers for further distribution in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio. Some were exported to Canada.

According to the AP, some of the products subjected to a recall included:

* 45.5-pound cases of "Centrella Signature, Hardwood Hickory Smoked, Spiral Sliced Ham with Natural Juices" with the case code "71292603304," packaged on Nov. 29, 2013. A best before date of "02/06/14."

* 45.8-lb. cases of "AMISH VALLEY, Fully Cooked, Hickory Smoked Spiral Sliced Ham" with the case code "71292645104," packaged on Nov. 29, 2013. A best before date of "02/06/14."

* 45.8-lb. cases of "AMISH VALLEY, Fully Cooked, Hickory Smoked Spiral Sliced Ham" with the case code "71292645104," packaged on Nov. 30, 2013. A best before date of "02/06/14."

* 31.6-lb. cases of "Ripple Creek Farms, Fully Cooked, Ready To Eat, Hickory Smoked, Spiral Sliced Ham" with the case code "71292603312," packaged on Nov. 30, 2013. A best before date of "02/06/14."

No illnesses associated with consumption of these products have been reported.

Listeria monocytogenes, an infection that primarily affects older adults, people with weakened immune systems and pregnant women and their newborns, is a type of bacteria that can give humans food poisoning when ingested.

Symptoms include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches and neck stiffness.
