Nutriom Recall: Dried Egg Products Could Contain Salmonella

According to the United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service, Nutriom LLC has recalled over 226, 710 pounds of their processed and dried egg products, for fear of possible contamination with salmonella.

The products tend to be "boil in bag" styled eggs, commonly used in buffet-styled food service. The products had been shipped to numerous military installations, as well as to homes and supermarkets across the United States and Canada.

According to the FSIS website, salmonella causes "one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses." Eating food that contains salmonella can cause salmonellosis, which appears with symptoms of stomach cramps, fever, and diarrhea. This can be particularly dangerous in elderly people, children, and those with weakened immune systems.

Nutriom had sent their product out for testing, and were alerted to the discrepancy by the laboratory testing the product. They then reported their findings to the FSIS, and began to recall their product.  So far, no reported cases of salmonellosis have been linked to this recalled product.

Foodborne illness causes approximately 48 million illnesses and about 3000 deaths every year.  With proper care and preparation of food, many of these cases would not occur. The FSIS website lists many PDF's on how to properly care for and manage food to ensure maximum safety.
