'True Detective' Creator Nic Pizolatto Re-Signs With HBO, but Season 3 Still a Doubt

Expect more Nic Pizzolatto work on HBO in the near future. Deadline is reporting that the True Detective creator has come to terms on a new deal that will see him remain at the premium cable network until 2018.

Though Pizzolatto's future is now clear, the fate of his most recognized creation remains a mystery. According to the report, a third season of True Detective is a definite possibility but by no means a guarantee.

The second season of the critically acclaimed crime anthology, which finished airing earlier this year, failed to capture the same plaudits as the Matthew McConaughey-Woody Harrelson fronted debut from 2014.

The show's sophomore season, which features a completely new story and cast lead by Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams, has received a lot of mixed reviews. It sits at a respectable 64% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a significant drop from its award winning predecessor's outstanding 85% mark.

Despite the show's lackluster reviews, the show remained a strong player in the ratings game. Nielsen says that True Detective's second run ended up averaging more same-night viewers (2.61 million) than Season 1 (2.33 million).

However, the numbers did dip ever so slightly when other viewing platforms were taken into account. HBO says Season 1 tallied about 11.9 million viewers across all platforms while season 2 managed only 11.3 million.

Regardless, Pizzolatto remains a hot property in the TV landscape and his future projects will no doubt garner similar attention.

"I am thrilled to continue our relationship with Nic, as he is one of the most exceptionally talented writers and producers working today," Said HBO's president of Programming Michael Lombardo in a statement. "I look forward to seeing where his unique creative vision will take us next."

Watch out for more Pizzolatto in the near future.
