Listeria Poisoning Alert: New York Company Recalls Chicken Salads for Listeria

Last Thursday, NY-based Sally Sherman Foods, recalled 3004 pounds of various chicken products, which might have been contaminated with Listeria monocytes, according to US Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

The different chicken salads were produced from February 2 to February 18 and contained four-pound plastic containers of Sally Sherman "Spa Chicken Salad with Greek Yogurt", Sally Sherman "Chicken Salad All White Meat", and Sally Sherman "Deluxe Chicken Salad All White Meat".

Additionally, they also contained Sally Sherman "Farmcrest Chicken Salad" and Sally Sherman "Cranberry Walnut Chicken Salad", according to reports from Food Safety News.

The products which have been recalled bear the number "P - 4400" inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The contaminated items were being shipped to distributor locations in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virgina.

The possible pathogen contamination was reportedly discovered by in - plant sampling of products which returned positive results for Listeria monocytes.

Fortunately, the company and FSIS have not received any reports of illness due to consumption of the products, but experts suggest that it is too early to predict the effect if any.

Consumption of food, when contaminated with Listeria monocytes causes miscarriages, premature delivery, stillbirths or life-threatening infections of newborns in pregnant women. For others, listerosis can cause muscle aches, stiff neck, headaches, fever, and loss of balance, dizziness, and convulsions.

Additionally, an invasive infection causes serious gastrointestinal issues for adults and children.

For consumers who have already purchased the products, it should either be thrown away or returned to the seller.

Notably, FSIS conducts routine checks to make sure that the food quality is ensured. Additionally, proper steps are taken to make sure that the affected products are no longer served to the consumers. The retail lists for all the recalls will be posted on FSIS website for further reference.
