AK47 Off To Play For The Sixers

Ak-47, as he is affectionately known all over the league, Andrei Kirilenko is slowly getting too far behind his moniker. Testament to this is his recent trade from the Brooklyn Nets to the Philadelphia 76ers.

The deal was made between the Net and the 76ers Wednesday which will see the veteran playing in different colors the next time he steps into the hard-court. The deal also includes forward Brandon Davies and a draft consideration in the future.

By cutting Kirilenko's $3.33 million salary, the Nets will see their coffer save a staggering $12 million that is if you deduct tax considerations. The 76ers on the other hand will face no problem seeing Kirilenko's salary since they are currently below NBA's salary cap.

Kirilenko's defensive presence and the ability to shoot the ball within the perimeter make him both a defensive and offensive weapon. These abilities will definitely help the Sixers' struggling offensive output. His veteran experience will also provide a reinvigorated defensive blockade within the painted area. All these traits look very positive when viewed with an untrained eye. Unfortunately, Kirilenko's career has been hampered with various injuries that affected both his rhythm and overall performance in the court. His playing time which was limited to a mere 15 minutes per game last season is a testament to the gradual deterioration of his performance. On top of that he only played a total of 45 games last season. It was also reported recently that he took a leave of absence from the Brooklyn Nets due to personal reasons.

Andrei Kirilenko, a native of Russia was drafted 24th overall pick in the 1999 NBA Draft. He is currently playing his 17th season in the NBA and has been with three different teams; Utah Jazz, Minnesota Timberwolves and Brooklyn Nets. Philadelphia 76ers will be his fourth NBA team to play for.
