The fastfood giant's simplified menu will be implemented on January 2015 all over the U.S.

McDonald's had declared that it experienced the worst monthly sales in the United States for more than ten years, CNBC reports. And to arrest and focus on the alarming sales drop, McDonald's cutting menu items is geared towards improving its service.

"There's more to come," McDonald's US President Mike Andres revealed during a conference call with its investors. "We don't need to have a big menu board to offer variety." Apparently, McDonald's will be eliminating five extra value meals and eight items in the menu starting next month.

McDonald's cutting menu items may affect the extra value meals although the fastfood giant hasn't confirmed yet which items in the menu will be taken out. However, the McDonald's is still in the process of evaluating all the ingredients, and items in the menu in selected branches of McDonald, according to Business Insider.

In the past, McDonald's has been on the spotlight for adding too much items in the menu.

The growing menu has not helped the overall operation. It added burden on the employees, higher expenses on total cost operations for the owners and longer queuing time for the customers. It is when McDonald's cutting menu items was seen as the mere solution.

Since 2007, McDonald's menu items had grown to 70 percent. McDonald's CEO Don Thompson stated that they are streamlining their merchandising board and product offerings to offer faster service to customers. McDonald's cutting menu items will also be the solution to simplify the operations.

McDonald's had removed and added menu items in the past. In 2013, McDonald's removed its Angus Third Pounder burgers and added Blueberry Pomegranate smoothie, McWrap, and Egg White Delight breakfast sandwich.

McDonald's spokeswoman had revealed that McDonald's cutting menu items are being tested in various cities in U.S. including Arkansas; Waco, Delaware; Little Rock, Texas; Bakersfield, California; Macon, Georgia; and Knoxville, Tennessee.

The changes may take effect on quarter-pounders, premium chicken sandwich and wraps. The move to make the menu smaller is also seen as a smart way to welcome food innovations in the coming years, president of McDonald's Mike Andres added.

With growing competition in the market, McDonald's performance had slammed down in the last quarter of 2014. Chipotle, a new player had taken a good share in the fastfood market. Casual players such as Carl's Jr., Hardee's and Burger King continued to gain strength in sales.

McDonald's cutting menu items could be a good turning point for the fastfood giant. Its updated sales record decrease of 6 percent, according to CNBC.
