Following the exciting announcement that Sony Pictures and Disney had finally made a deal to add Peter Parker/Spider-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it was also said that they would be replacing Andrew Garfield as the character - however, upon seeing Gwen Stacy's return for the third installment, now audiences wonder if Garfield's girlfriend, Oscar-nominated actress Emma Stone, will be returning for the role of Peter Parker's high school sweetheart.
Emma Stone's turn as Spidey's blonde girlfriend has been one of her most popular roles, so it's only natural that now that the first rumors about a possible Gwen Stacy return emerge, audiences can't wait to see whether she'll go back to the role - even though Andrew Garfield, her off-screen beau who she met during filming of Spider-Man, is out of the picture.
According to International Business Times UK, for now everything regarding Gwen Stacy's return is just rumors, as it has been reported that the new movie will not be a continuation of the two films' plots but rather a reboot, set to make the character fit in well with the rest of the plot of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
However, if they were to continue with the story, matters would complicate for a Gwen Stacy return, considering the character died at the end of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2."
KDrama Masters reports that she could also be attached to play the role if Gwen Stacy's return were to really happen - or she could take on the role of Mary Jane Watson, the character Kirsten Dunst played in the first Tobey Maguire trilogy.
As KPop Starz reports, though, the return of the Emma Stone character could just come in the form of dream sequences, as there hasn't been much said at all on the subject. Another possibility is that the filmmakers will follow a comic book storyline called "The Clone Saga," where a villain called the Jackal creates clones of both Gwen and Peter.
After the news of Spidey entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe, his movies will probably take on a completely different direction - and it's possible that a Gwen Stacy return is in the new path. In the video below, Emma Stone seems to wink at the possibility!
