Recipe in Movie: Onigiri in Kamome Diner

Kamome Diner is a tranquil and heart-warming movie. In Helsinki, Finland which is the country of the north-pole fairy, aurora, Santa Claus and reindeers, a new restaurant opens. This is a small Japanese restaurant which a Japanese woman, Sachie manages. She believes onigiri - also known as omusubi or rice ball – which is a Japanese food made from white rice formed into triangular or oval shapes and often wrapped in nori (seaweed). Traditionally, an onigiri is filled with pickled ume (umeboshi), salted salmon,katsuobushi, kombu, tarako, or any other salty or sour ingredient as a natural preservative.- is soul food of Japan. Although she chooses it as a representative menu of her restaurant and waits customers, for a month, she has no customer. One day, her first customer comes into her restaurant. Because he likes cartoon, he asks her a cartoon song. But she can’t recall it. So in a bookstore, she asks a Japanese woman this song. She is Japanese tourist. Sachie makes her stay her house and Midori works in her restaurant for in return.

One day, they make cinnamon rolls and it attracts people. One of them becomes a regular customer. Her name is Masako. She passed her 20 years for caring her parents and she lost her luggage in the airport. Though she always thinks that she lost something, she gets back her smile. Sachie, Midori, and Masako’s rice ball and kindness achieves recognition of Finland people, and they can live new lives.

ONIGIRI

Ingredients
4 cups rice
3 pickled umes (umeboshi)
2 tbsp dried bonito
1 tsp cooking wine
1/2 tsp soy sauce
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup water
Laver

Directions
1. Pick out seeds from umes, and apply soy sauce and cooking wine on it. Then mince it into small pieces.
2. Make salty water with 1 cup of water and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Apply it on hands.
3. After that, hold 1/2 cup of rice in a hand, put the umes on rice, and make it lump-like ball.
4. Cut laver into adequate size and attach it on rice-balls.
