Skyfall's Roger Deakins Set to Film 'Blade Runner 2' With Denis Villeneuve

Fans of the neo-noir sci-fi film 'Blade Runner' have been waiting for decades for a sequel. There have been talks that Ridley Scott would be working on 'Blade Runner 2.' However, the director denied the rumors in an interview with Variety.

Despite Scott's departure, 'Blade Runner 2' is moving forward.

The Playlist has just reported that famed cinematographer Roger Deakins has been attached to film the unnamed sequel. Denis Villeneuve will direct the movie and Harrison Ford has been confirmed to return as Rick Deckard.

Michael Green will also team up with Hampton Fancher, who wrote the original film's screenplay with David Peoples. The writers will work around the idea that was created by Fancher and Scott.

The announcement was made via a press release by Alcon Entertainment's Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove. The co-CEOs are understandably excited about having Deakins onboard.

"Roger is an extraordinary talent and we are very excited that Denis and Roger have chosen to continue their collaboration in bringing the sequel to BLADE RUNNER to the big screen," Johnson and Kosove said in a statement.

Deakins is a multiple Academy Award nominee for Best Cinematography. He has worked on films like 'Barton Fink,' 'O Brother, Where are Thou?' and 'The Shawshank Redemption.' The cinematographer has been nominated for his work on 'The Reader,' 'No Country for Old Men' and 'The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.' He recently worked on the 2012 James Bond movie 'Skyfall.'

'Blade Runner' starred Ford, Rutger Hauer, Daryl Hannah, Sean Young and Edward James Olmos. It was based on Philip K. Dick's 1968 novel 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?' It was nominated for several awards, including the Academy Award for Best Art Direction and the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score.

'Blade Runner 2' will start principal photography in 2016.
