"You're running out of excuses not to fight me." This was the exacting statement that welterweight contender Amir Khan issued towards the Floyd Mayweather camp. This, preceding what he expects would be an impressive performance against Chris Algieri in a fight scheduled Friday in New York this week.
Khan said he has been preparing to ensure victory over the American welterweight which would likely give him a shot at fighting the world's best pound for pound fighter. It's something that he's been waiting to do for two years. Winning over Algieri he says; would not only guarantee Mayweather's attention but would also be reason enough for the champ not to make excuses not to fight him yet again.
Khan has been outspoken about his eagerness to fight Mayweather and has issued several challenges directed towards the champ only to be turned down each and every time. Amir Khan said that he didn't want to upset his fans by giving them a lousy performance but is instead intent on making sure that he puts on an impressive performance that even Mayweather's camp could dare not deem him "unworthy" of having a shot at the world title.
Khan was formerly trained by Floyd Sr. He further discloses that the elder Mayweather even said right about that time that he will be the first man ever to beat his son who has a perfect professional fight record. A statement issued by Floyd Sr. after the Pacquiao fight says otherwise. This time he says that a fight with Amir Khan would be way easier especially after Floyd Jr.'s recent victory.
Khan is hoping that he gets a nod from the champ and a shot at the title in mid-September of this year. He feels that this would be enough time to get himself in perfect fighting condition after fasting for Ramadan ending in July. This might be his last chance to get to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. after the champ announced the possibility of retirement after what may be his last fight in September.
