"Game Change" is based on the events of the 2008 United States presidential election campaign that featured, among others, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and Arizona Sen. John McCain.
Sarah Palin and her supporters have criticized the film for what they called a "false narrative," according to the Los Angeles Times. That did not stop American TV viewers from showing their appreciation however.
Overall, the film took home four prizes, including the Emmy for outstanding lead actress, thanks to Julianne Moore's portrayal of Palin during her campaign as McCain's running mate.
In interviews with reporters backstage, Moore however told reporters, "This [film] is not as much about Sarah Palin as it is about the process," perhaps hoping to put a spotlight on the process of electing the presidential candidates, rather than singling out a single person in the race.
With politics being on the mind of most Americans this year, part of the film's popularity at the Emmys can likely be traced to the ongoing presidential election. Some early remarks made by host Jimmy Kimmel also suggested that viewers might be in for a lot of politically colored humor, but in the end such remarks were kept to a minimum, allowing for a mostly politics-free Awards ceremony.
