Peanut Butter Recall: Salmonella Outbreaks Number Twelve this Year

A peanut butter recall expands now to 76 products, with 30 people reporting salmonella poisoning across 19 states. Only one month ago, two died and 141 sickened from a salmonella outbreak from cantaloupes.

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), 400 hundred people die in the United States from acute salmonellosis, an infection caused by Salmonella bacteria to the small intestine.

A quick search on the Center for Disease Control website shows twelve salmonella outbreaks this year, ranging from tuna to poultry, cantaloupe to mangoes.

Sunland Inc., the supplier of Trader Joe's Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter, has issued a recall on 76 of its peanut butters and almond butters produced between May 1 and September 24. Sunland Inc. is recalling these products because they were manufactured with the same equipment as the Trader Joe's product.

In a USA Today report last month, it quotes Nancy Donley, a spokeswoman for STOP Foodborne Illness, saying "These illnesses and deaths are preventable." Her group has urged the FDA to more quickly put out new regulations, based on authority from 2010 legislation. Regarding the Salmonella outbreak from cantaloupes in August, she said, "This shouldn't have happened."

Salmonella poisoning can cause serious and possibly fatal infections, particularly in young children and the elderly. Salmonella infection symptoms include fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea for 12 to 72 hours after eating the contaminated food. Most people recover after four to seven days, even without treatment.

According to WebMD, "Some people develop severe diarrhea and need hospital care. Rarely, salmonella bacteria escape the gut and enter the blood, where they spread to other parts of the body. Such infections can be fatal if not treated promptly with antibiotics."
