As the film that jumped-started Alicia Silverstone's career into superstardom reaches its 20th anniversary, its screenwriter and director Amy Heckerling has now officially confirmed that a "Clueless" Broadway musical is underway, for all those nostalgic of that long-past time that was the 1990s!
In a recent interview about the movie's upcoming anniversary, Heckerling confirmed the "Clueless" Broadway musical, saying she was working with Kristin Hanggi, the person who directed Rock of Ages, alongside the company that produced "Jersey Boys" and the original production of "Into the Woods."
Heckerling confirmed the "Clueless" Broadway musical to Entertainment Tonight, after rumors had been going around about the possibility for quite some time, saying she had already written the script and they were working on everything else, admitting the coming problem: casting!
The original film didn't just jump-start Silverstone's career, but also that of some of the biggest names in the next two decades, including Brittany Murphy, "Scrubs" actor Donald Faison and even next Marvel Avenger Paul Rudd, so whoever ends up getting cast in the "Clueless" Broadway musical has some big shoes to fill!
According to Jezebel, the "Clueless" Broadway musical will be a jukebox one, which is to say, it won't be using original songs but rather well-known tunes, and considering the time and place, there's little doubt that the production will feature a lot of very 90s things such as No Doubt or Coolio, so fans can wait for a few surprises!
Vogue reports that Heckerling already has a few people in mind, as it seems pop star Katy Perry has expressed interest in the project, saying she's a big fan of the original movie - though the writer and director wouldn't mind seeing Iggy Azalea playing Cher if the "Roar" singer isn't around... at one point back in the 1990s, actresses like Reese Witherspoon and Angelina Jolie were considered for the role!
Now it's time for theater fans to start doing the math to see who will be in the confirmed "Clueless" Broadway musical!
