iPhone 5 Maps App: Switch Back to Google Maps on the iPhone 5 and iOS 6 Devices

For iPhone 5 users, there has been major disappointment with the Maps app, which is homegrown by Apple. The app, which is underdeveloped and slightly broken, replaced Google Maps on all iOS 6 devices.

Now Google Maps is no longer available on the Apple App Store. The only way to have Google Maps (maps.google.com) on an iPhone updated with iOS 6 is to open it on the browser. Much of the functionality of Google Maps will work in the Safari browser, although some features will be missing and it won't be as seamless compared to a native app.

Due to growing negative feedback, Apple CEO Tim Cook delivered an apology.

In a letter on Apple.com, Cook writes that the company, "strive(s) to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible." He continued, "With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment. We are extremely sorry of the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better."

"While we're improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app," he said in the letter.
