Approximately 300 to 400 barrels, or 400,000 pounds of maple syrup was seized by Quebec police late September. It is suspected that the syrup was stolen from a warehouse outside of Montreal, however, authorities have not confirmed whether the maple syrup seized from S.K. Export is the same stolen syrup.
"They said they were searching to find some stolen drums from Quebec," said Etienne Saint-Pierre, owner of S.K. Export. "It was a surprise. That was the first news I received."
The Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers never revealed just how much of their syrup had been lifted from the storage facility. However, it is known that the amount of product was worth more than $30 million.
"We know that it's millions of dollars that was stolen," the Globe and Mail quoted Quebec police Sgt. Richard Gagné as saying. "It's a very large amount."
According to mapletrader.com, a gallon of maple syrup can run around $45 to $60. It is sometimes called liquid gold, for it takes roughly 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of pure maple syrup.
