Jurassic World Passes Avengers To Become Third Biggest Film In History

Jurassic World is now the third highest-grossing film in history, behind only Titanic and Avatar. The dinosaur thriller has racked up US$1.52 billion (S$2.08 billion), pushing it past Marvel's The Avengers and its US$1.52 billion haul. Universal, the studio behind Jurassic World, has cracked the top five list of highest-grossing films twice this year after propelling Furious 7 to US$1.51 billion globally.

Prior to 2015, no Universal release had ever passed US$1 billion at the worldwide box office. Jurassic World has grossed US$614.3 million at the domestic box office, making it only the fourth film in North American history to cross US$600 million mark. It has generated an additional US$907.3 million at the foreign box office.

The film stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, with Colin Trevorrow handling directing duties. More than a decade separated installments in the series, as Jurassic Park III hit theatres in 2001. Jurassic World has one remaining territory left to open - Japan, where it debuts on Aug 5. With ticket sales winding down in the US and China, the two biggest markets for film, Jurassic World is unlikely to topple Titanic and its US$2.18 billion haul or Avatar and its US$2.79 billion bounty from their spots on the chart.

On the domestic box office chart, Jurassic World is still sitting at #4 behind The Avengers. As of today's box office update, director Colin Trevorrow's first attempt at a blockbuster had raked in $614 million, while The Avengers has $623 million. There's a good chance Jurassic World will end up besting Marvel Studios' superhero team in the US before it leaves theaters. And if you're hoping that Jurassic World ends up taking down James Cameron's aforementioned box office champs, don't hold your breath.Titanic has $2.186 billion while Avatar has a whopping $2.788 billion, making them nearly impossible for Jurassic World to catch, like a tyrannosaurus rex chasing Bryce Dallas Howard in high heels.
