The Spaghetti Incident: Your Pasta on the Go!

There's a lot of variety of this classic Italian staple. Some may enjoy it more with red or white sauce. Whatever the case may be, it is an accepted fact that spaghetti is almost everyone's favourite. However, unlike other favourites, burger and fries for example, you can never enjoy eating pasta while on the go. Well, not until the Spaghetti Incident, that is.

Yes, you guessed it right. It is named after the Guns N' Roses fifth album, however there's nothing hard rock or punk rock about the restaurant located at the Lower East Side. The restaurant opened last May of this year on a quiet stretch of Eldridge Street. With vintage interior and unassuming style, one can't help but feel relaxed. The New York City based restaurant is known for putting all types of pasta dishes into a cone that customers can carry around. The restaurant currently has 9 different pasta dishes. The price of each cone ranges between $9-$12 and a little extra for more expensive pastas.

Chef and owner, Emanuele Attala, came up with the idea for the spaghetti cone after looking at old photos of his hometown, Rimni on Italy's Adriatic coast. In 1950s, beach festivals organized by the locals were popular. This is to draw visitors and speed up the economy while they recover from the destruction brought about by the Second World War. Vendors set up booths in the sand while locals and tourists enjoy their food as they stroll around the area. Butchers and fishmongers would usually rip sheets of wax paper off their rolls, shape them into a cone and serve food into them like a bowl.

According to the Guaridan, Attala experimented with serving penne and gnocchi out of the cone however, it didn't seem to work quite well. A flat surface is needed to pin the penne or gnocchi. Not like the spaghetti which can be twirled perfectly with a fork inside the cone.
