Yvonne Craig: Batgirl From 60s Adam West ‘Batman’ Loses Battle To Cancer, Passes Away At 78

The very campy "Batman" live-action television series that ran from 1966 to 1968 may have been quite different than the current portrayal of the DC Comics character, but it's still iconic almost five decades after its inception, as were the characters in it - including Yvonne Craig's Batgirl.

As a matter of fact, Yvonne Craig's Batgirl was the first time the character of Barbara Gordon ever appeared on the small screen, and now the world remembers the actress once more after her family has announced Craig has unfortunately passed away at age 78, following a long battle with breast cancer.

The sad news was announced through the actress' official website, where her family explained that Yvonne Craig from Batgirl had passed away.

"She had been in chemo almost continuously for the past two plus years since being diagnosed and that had weakened her immune system as well as her body," read the statement about Craig's death. "This didn't dampen her sense of humor or her spirit, she intended to fight and win this battle. In the end, her mind still wanted to fight but her body had given up."

In the meantime, news outlets such as NBC News remember her career even beyond Yvonne Craig's Batgirl as, while that was by far and wide her best known role, she as also a part of some of the most iconic shows of the time, including the original "Star Trek" series starring William Shatner, where she played the Orion Marta in the episode "Whom Gods Destroy."

According to BBC, long before landing Yvone Craig's Batgirl role, she was trained at the Ballet Russe in Monte Carlo, which helped her to do her own stunts in "Batman"; and besides the two landmark television shows, Craig also starred on two films opposite the King of Rock 'n Roll himself, Elvis Presley.

We send our deepest condolences to the family of Yvonne Craig, Batgirl.
