The marriage between former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kordell Stewart and his reality-television star wife Porsha Williams appears to be over. The website TMZ is reporting that Stewart has filed for divorce from Williams in Fulton County Superior Court in Georgia. The papers were filed on March 22. They say the marriage was irretrievably broken.
Williams was featured on the show Real Housewives of Atlanta. The show was part of what helped return Stewart to prominence after years away from the cameras following his NFL career. Stewart played college football at the University of Colorado. He then spent seven years with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where at first he dazzled as a hybrid wide receiver/quarterback nicknamed Slash. But after switching to full-time quarterback, his performance was more erratic, with either great or horrible decision making during games. He was cut from the Steelers in 2002, and he retired from the NFL in 2005. After leaving the NFL, Stewart reemerged on TV as an occassional guest star and football analyst. But his union with Williams made him even more visible.
And his marriage might have brought him more fame, but it also had issues. TMZ said the issue of children came up often on episodes of Real Housewives of Atlanta. Williams wanted children but also wanted to continue working, while Stewart, who already has a child from a previous relationship, said she had to choose between being a mother and her career. US Weekly pointed out that in one part of the Real Housewives episodes, other cast members asked Williams if she felt her husband was too "controlling." During a fight about plans for a first child, US Weekly said Stewart forbade his wife from still doing charity work after a child was born.
As for the issue of spousal support, TMZ said court documents it obtained show that Stewart might fight any claims made by Williams. In the records, Stewart described his estranged wife as being able to support herself. There also appears to have been a prenuptial agreement that will cover much of their assets.
Williams was a new cast member of the Real Housewives of Atlanta, added along with Kenya Moore.
