Shakira $250m Lawsuit: Singer Looks to Dismiss Ex's Lawsuit

Shakira is currently tied up in a messy $250 million legal proceeding with her ex-boyfriend Antonio de la Rua, according to the Daily Mail.

Shakira has asked a New York judge to throw out the case against her, the Daily Mail reported.

De La Rua is the son of former Argentine President Fernando de la Rua and dated the Colombian singer from 2000 to 2011.

The lawsuit claims that de la Rua is responsible for shaping the "Shakira brand," although she claims she was already an international icon before meeting her now ex-boyfriend.

"I was already a well-known and recognised artist, and my international career was established and solid," the singer said.

According to The Daily News and court documents, Shakira said she hired him "out of pity" in 2005 "at his request" because he "was unemployed," even though he "lacked experience or knowledge of the music industry."

She also said he was just "one of my numerous advisors."

De la Rua claims he is responsible for two of her biggest hits, "Hips Don't Lie" and "Waka Waka". He also claims he is responsible for securing her $300 million deal with Live Nation in 2008.

The singer further claims to have hired de la Rua because his father "was forced to resign as president of Argentina at the end of 2001...for his own safety, became self-exiled, from Argentina and he became unemployed."

The two have clashed in the court of law before when Shakira sued de la Rua for misappropriating $3 million.

Currently, Shakira is a host on The Voice and is dating Gerard Pique of Barcelona. The two also recently had a son together, Milan.
