KFC Opening New Restaurant Without Colonel Sanders or Bones

KFC is making some extreme changes in hopes of bringing in a different crowd.

The fired chicken chain says it's opening a location called "KFC eleven" early next month. The new location will be near its headquarters in Louisville, Ky.

According to USA Today, the restaurant will serve flatbread with toppings, rice bowls, salads and only boneless pieces of its Original Recipe chicken. The name of the new restaurant is a reference to the 11 herbs and spices Sanders used in the Original recipe.

The restaurant's exterior will also look different. KFC will not feature the famous face of Colonel Sanders, whose apron and white-bearded, has been front and center at all traditional KFC locations.

KFC Eleven will serve side dishes such as waffles fires, garlic mashed potatoes and coleslaw. The chicken will be the boneless variety, which was introduced in April as an easier alternative to its traditional breast, thigh and drumsticks pieces.

The restaurant will open next year Aug. 5, the second location will be at a mall strip in coming months.

According the Huffington Post, KFC eleven's opening is a reflection of the challenges facing traditional fast food chains such as McDonald's Burger Kings and Wendy's. Younger aged individuals are heading to chains such as Chipotle Mexican Grill and Panera Bread. They're getting better food for slightly higher price.

John Cywinski, President of KFC, said in an interview that people often equate KFC with "buckets of fried chicken on the bone," and he hopes to change that with the new location.

KFC is owned by Yum Brands Inc., which also owns Taco Bell and Pizza Hut.
