Martina Hingis Comeback: Tennis Star Eyeing Return to Grand Slam Level

Martina Hingis returned to the Women Tennis Association doubles circuit with a blast.

The Washington Kastles have won their third consecutive World Team Tennis title. The Kastles defeated the Springfield Lasers 25-12 Sunday night. The match was delayed for two hours because of the rain.

Hingis won her matches in singles, women's double and mixed doubles for the Kastles. She beat tennis pro Alisa Kleybanova 5-2 in singles. Hingis, a former world No. 1 in singles, had plans to return with Daniela Hantuchova at five events leading to the U.S Open in September.

Hingis was looking forward to a successful comeback to the WTA tour.

"I can't tell. I hope it goes well," she said according to the Washington Post

Hingis was recently named World Team Tennis's Female MVP for the second straight season, but the 32-year-old athlete has not played at a WTA event since 2007.

"I've been thinking about it for the past five years," Hingis said. "I didn't have the courage."

Hingis won a Grand Slam singles title at 16 and reached seven Grand Slam single finals as a teenager. She also won nine Grand Slam doubles titles from 1996 to 2002, including all four majors in 1998. Hingis was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame, earlier this month.

Earlier this season, the Kastles won their 34th consecutive match, which the club claims was the longest winning streak in "major U.S. pro sports history. The strike surpassed the 33-game run by the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA.

The streak ended the next day.
