Warning: Beware of Caramel Apples Due to Listeria

Caramel apples have somewhat became a tradition in the American culture as part of celebrating Halloween. Kids are always looking forward to it as treat or something that they would get from a nearby park vendor. But recent study shows that this could cause Listeria and it could sometimes be fatal if not prevented or handled carefully and quickly.

Nature World News published a news report this week stating the dangers of caramel apples as the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes could possibly grow on apples that are candy-coated.

Based of CDC's (Center for Disease Control) statistics, about 1600 Americans are affected by this infection annually. Some just experience fever, some muscle pain and stomachaches and it could only last for a few days. But pregnant women and the elderly are going to be in danger if these bacteria infect them because they are more vulnerable to infection. The thing is, if it wasn't cured early and the infection continues, there is a huge chance that the patient could die. Statistics even show that about 260 people die every year in the US because of this case.

Despite of these scary statistics, there is no need for one to be afraid if their immune system is healthy and if they eat fruits that are really clean. One should note that if the bacteria enters the body, detecting it is known to be hard until symptoms have are already showing.

A study concentrating on Listeria was made at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Food Research Institute and based on their observations; autumn is the season this disease is likely to take place. This is also known as the flu and allergy season.

In order to not be a part of the statistics of people getting infected by it, just make sure to stay away from caramel apples for now, or at least be 100% sure that they are clean.
