It's Official: YouTube Is Launching a Subscription Service

YouTube has just unveiled its long rumored subscription service. At a press event in Los Angeles the online video giant unveiled 'YouTube Red', an ad-free YouTube experience that comes with a host of other add-ons.

For $9.99 a month, subscribers get features and services such as offline video viewing, premium video content from YouTube's partner creators, and access to the company's still unreleased music streaming platform 'YouTube Music'.

Senior Product Manager Matt Leske gave a lowdown of YouTube Music in this blog post. He writes:

YouTube Music is designed to make discovering, watching and listening to music easier than ever. Any song or artist you choose on YouTube Music will start you on a personal journey through one of the richest music catalogs; just sign in, tap a track you love, and see where your music takes you. And as a special bonus - YouTube Red works with Google Play Music, so subscribe to one and automatically get access to the other.

Leske's second point is perhaps the most significant. Being a Red subscriber also grants you access to Google Play Music and vice-versa.

In a separate blog post, Global Head of Original Programming Susanne Daniels broke down some of the exclusive shows only available to Red users.

YouTube superstar PewDiePie is among the creators making exlusive content for the service. His new show is described as so:

Scare PewDiePie: In this reality-adventure series from the creator and executive producers of The Walking Dead at Skybound Entertainment and Maker Studios, experience thrills, chills and laughter as PewDiePie encounters terrifying situations inspired by his favorite video games.

Other big names on deck for Red include Fine Brothers Entertainment, Rooster Teeth, and College Humor.

The first batch of these new shows will be coming early next year.

The service launches on October 28.
