Sony's Shuhei Yoshida Talks PS4 Backwards Compatibilty, VR, and More During Q&A

As part of its big presentation at Paris Games Week, Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida took time to answer fan questions regarding the PlayStation Brand.

Using the PlayStation France Twitter account he addressed top concerns like backwards compatibility, the state of first party exclusives, and the future of PSN and PlayStation of VR.

Playstationlifestyle.net has a rundown of some of the big questions.

Yoshida says that backwards compatibility will not be coming to the PlayStation 4. He didn't elaborate on the reasons why the feature can't be implemented, simply giving a clear cut 'no' to the question.

Another much requested feature is the ability to change your Playstation Network username. Yoshida said he himself would like the option to become a reality, but concedes that it all depends on whether or not Sony's engineers can make it happen.

On the topic of Sony's slate of first-party games, he said that there are dozens of exclusive titles in development at the company's in-house and third party development studios.

"That's a tough question to answer. We have 14 Sony worldwide studios and we also work with external developers like Quantic Dream or Wild Sheep as well. So it has to be larger than like 30, maybe 40, and 50. I have no idea."

He also gave special mention to RIME, a small open world puzzle game from indie developer Tequila Works. The title was revealed in 2013, but news regarding development has been sparse since then. Yoshida said the game is still coming, but it will take time due to the developer's small size.

As for VR, he told fans that he expects the technology to have a huge impact on our daily lives.

"As a technology, I believe, and many people believe, virtual reality tech will a larger impact to people's lives than mobile does now. But it's going to take time." he says.
