Macklemore Crowned The Source Man of The Year

Macklemore is The Source's man of the year.

According to the Associated Press, the Seattle native rapper and producer Ryan Lewis created some of 2013's most played songs, including "Same Love," "Can't Hold Us," and "Thrift Shop".

Their album, "The Heist," sold more than one million copies, despite being independently produced. Their videos for "Thrift Shop" and "Can't Hold Us" had a combined 700 million views.

The group have also been nominated for seven Grammys, including top honors album and song of the year. The rapper told the magazine that a Grammy would for Best Hip-Hop Album would be controversial.

"We're up against Kendrick [Lamar], who made a phenomenal album," Macklemore told The Source. "If we win a Grammy for Best Rap Album, hip-hop is going to be heated."

The 30-year-old rapper, talked about his hip-hop credentials and his role in the rap world.

"People are going to be skeptical. I'm a white dude from Seattle," he said. "People are rightfully skeptical of white people making hip-hop."

Macklemore noted that many people are still stuck in a certain mentality and are not willing to change and evolve with the hip hop world. He said he's always been known as the white rapper and a one-hit wonder after releasing his hit "Thrift Shop".

"The song almost got too big," Macklemore said. "People weren't able to see the rest of the album for what it was. They put us in the one-hit wonder box. And they didn't give the rest of the project room to live. People didn't do their research.

"The first place that some of the criticism will go is the white boy came in and f***ed up hip-hop. But if you take the race thing out, the success at pop, the varying degrees of parents letting their kids listen to it, you cannot deny the quality of the music," he said.

During an interview with ABC News, Macklemore said often worries about relapsing into the substance abuse that nearly ruined his life. In 2008, the rapper landed himself in the hospital for drug and alcohol abuse. Macklemore described that low point in his life as "Isolation, broke, depressed, no reason to really live."

"For me, what is a temptation is coming home off of the road, which is why this time period is interesting," the rapper told ABC News. "This is when I've fallen back before."

Macklemore shared a copy of the magazine cover on his Instagram page and captioned, "The Source. Man of the year. Very crazy."

Previous man of the year winners include Rick Ross and 2 Chainz.
