Kraft Velveeta Recall: USDA Pulls Over a Million Pounds of Product Due to Mislabeling

Over a millions pounds of ready-made Kraft macaroni meals have been recalled due to mislabeling.

According to NBC News, Truitt Brothers Inc., is recalling 1.77 million pounds of its shelf-stable pasta and ground beef products. The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the products are being pulled off store shelves due to misbranding and an undeclared allergen.

Truitt Brothers Inc., a Kentucky-based company, said the problem was discovered during a recent routine check. Officials found that a supplier mixed up the correct labels with one that have incorrect ingredients. The USDA said the products contained hydrolyzed soy protein and dried soy sauce, which are not declared on some labels.

Hydrolyzed soy protein and dried soy sauce are two known allergens, which many people are allergic to.  

The 3.3 pound cases contain six, nine-ounce microwavable containers of "Kraft Velveeta Cheesy Skillets Single-Ultimate Cheeseburger Mac." The products display a a used by/sell by date of 02 March 2014 - 23 Oct 2014.

According to FSIS the products were made between May 6, 2013 and Jan. 16, 2014. The products involved in the recall were shipped nationwide.

No illnesses associated with Kraft have been reported, but anyone concerned should contact a healthcare provider. The USDA has classified this as a Class II recall, meaning it's a health hazard due to possible illness from eating the food.
