Captain and Tennille Divorce After 39 Years of Marriage

After 39 years of marriage, Captain and Tennille are calling it quits.

According to People magazine, the married singing duo best known for the hit song "Love Will Keep Us Together," are getting a divorce.

Cathryn Antionette "Toni" Tennille, 73, filed for divorce on Jan. 16 from "Captain" Daryl Dragon, 71, in Prescott, Arizona City courthouse, according to Rumorfix. A statement on CaptainandTennille.net confirmed the split.

"Until Thursday, January 16th, 2014, when Toni Tennile met with a DIVORCE ATTORNEY, in Phoenix, AZ, everything relating to THE CAPTAIN & TENNILLE appeared to the public as them being the ideal model for a 'rock-solid' married pair. But almost all people naturally evolve over time, & sometimes hidden feelings start to be uncovered when one may read, just a little more into (the popularized, substitute heading appearing just below), stating, for instance: 'MUSIC HAS KEPT THEM TOGETHER.'"

The pair met in 1972 and married in November 1974. Dragon was a keyboard player for the Beach Boys before meeting his wife. Tennille was the co-writer of a musical.

They released their first album "Love Will Keep Us Together" in 1974. It stayed on top of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for nine weeks and won the Grammy for Record of the Year.

Other major hits during their time together included "Muskrat Love," "The Way I Want to Touch You," "Shop Around" and "Do That to Me One More Time". The couple sold more than 23 million albums.

They starred in their own ABC variety show, "The Captain and Tennille Show," which aired from 1976-1977 and also appeared in network specials.

Tennille revealed on her blog in 2010 that Dragon was suffering from a neurological condition whose symptoms were similar to those of Parkinson's disease.

"Many of you know he is dealing with a neurological condition (not Parkinsons, but something similar) that causes him to have tremors...pretty severe at times...that interfere with his ability to play keyboards," she wrote on her blog. "Some days he does pretty well...other days his playing is severely compromised. His condition is exacerbated by any kind of stress, and worrying about his ability to play has made his condition worse. Also, his sister, Carmen, passed away recently, and he is trying to deal with that loss in his own way. I hope all of you understand that he would be there if he could, but it isn't possible this time. Maybe next year."

The couple have no children together.
