'Mean Girls' Director Flashes Back on Rachel McAdams and Lindsay Lohan Role Change

This year marks the tenth anniversary of "Mean Girls" the movie.

"Mean Girls" director Mark Waters sat down with Vulture to reflect on the film's 10-year legacy and divulge some behind-the-scenes stories and secrets about the movies now-famous cast members.

According to the filmmaker, actress Lindsay Lohan was originally considered to play the role of lead mean girl Regina George, while Rachel McAdams first auditioned for the part of Cady.

"Her energy is a very aggressive, testosterone-laden energy, and that's exactly what I knew I needed for Regina George," Waters told Vulture. "When I gave it to her, she was like, 'I f--king love Regina George! This is exactly the part I want to play.' So we did a read-through, and we were trying to look for somebody to play the role of Cady, but frankly, we didn't find anyone we liked who felt strong enough to go up against Lindsay."

Time Entertainment reported that after Waters handed the role to the 24-year-old McAdams because she was considered too mature and old to play the role of Cady. After losing the role of Regina, Lohan reportedly offered to play the lead role.

"When Lindsay was acting with Rachel, she got very shy, because Rachel was older and a very accomplished actress," Waters said. "She'd come in the room and not talk to Lindsay--she was very focused. Lindsay kind of got nervous around her, and I thought that, more than anything, was going to be the deciding factor, the fact that she affected Lindsay in that way."

The Tina Fey teen comedy made nearly $130 million worldwide.

Earlier this week, the "Freaky Friday" actress reunited with her former "Mean Girl" co-star Daniel Franzese. The two shared a picture from their outing on Instagram with the caption, "@whatsupdanny #soquiche #werknyc."
