Karate: Winning is Not Everything According to One Trainer

Parents are usually concerned which extracurricular activities their kids would like to take part in. For parents who are inclined towards arts, they would let their children learn painting, drawing and the like.

For active parents, they would want their children to join soccer clubs or tennis clubs. No matter which club it may be, the main goal is to have their kids learn something other than what is being taught in the four corners of the classroom.

This brings us to an article in Ledger Enquirer which featured a man who teaches kids more than just karate. Ron Ziss is the owner and teacher at the O Tetsu Cho karate center. Though he won many trophies and tournaments, he doesn't only believe in winning but he teaches kids more than just that which is why most parents choose to bring their children here. Learning martial art has its benefits but self defense isn't also the reason.

Ziss explained that the reason why parents bring their children to learn karate is because of the exercise and discipline of the sport. He added that the kids can benefit both physically and mentally. He said that most parents want their children to start with something they will finish, and for most of his students who started with him, they also stick with the class.

Ziss is 68 years old and has taught karate for more than 30 years. He started to show some interest in the art while serving the military in Okinawa, Japan. He can train anyone who is interested, however now most of his students are children.

Karate, he said, provides a total body workout.  He cited some benefits from the sport like improved reflexes and coordination, more balance, increased stamina and strength. He added that many people might not think of this sport as something that can improve a persons' cardiovascular health, but according to him it can also be considered as a workout.
