Big Fast Food Chains Form Alliances with Each Other to Drive Sales

Fast food chains from all over the world are posting declining revenues and record low customers. These companies have been feeling the pinch for a while now and some of the biggest names in fast food are turning to alliances to help capture an increasingly detached market, Economic Times reported.

In India, fast food giants Burger King, Pizza Hut, and Carl's Jr. are trying out new tactics to try and lure customers back to their restaurants. For Burger King, that means partnering up with Salman Khan-hosted reality show Big Boss. Burger King's Bigg Boss Whopper will be in stores around the country beginning this week.

"We're hopeful of a consumption upswing in the October-December quarter. Products such as these should keep consumer interest going," Burger King India chief executive officer Rajeev Varman said.

Pizza Hut, for their part, partnered up with PepsiCo's snack brand Kurkure for the special Krunchy Kurkure Pizza. This special vegetarian pizza is topped with onions, tomatoes, jalapeno peppers, and Kurkure snacks. The non-vegetarian version has chicken keema together with the other ingredients, according to Pizza Hut India.

The pizza giant has also previously collaborated with Hindustan Unilever (HUL) for jointly marketed ketchup and pizza brand Twist. Pizza Hut added the brand to its menu and HUL started selling Kissan Twist in its stores.

Carl's Jr. also tied up with cricketer Yuvraj Singh's fund YouWeCan Ventures to sell Kingfisher beer at select stores. This unique position makes Carl's Jr. one of the more affordable options for fast food with beer in the menu.

McDonald's also tried to spice things up in time for the Minions movie that came out. "The response exceeded our expectations and provided incremental marketing exposure to both Universal Studios as well as us," said Kedar Teny, digital and marketing director for McDonald's India, West and South.
