Walnuts Reduces ‘Bad’ Cholesterol, Lessens Risk of Heart Disease

If an apple a day keeps the doctors away then two handfuls of walnuts a day could keep heart disease away.

Walnut is a healthy snack that can lower body's cholesterol levels meaning it can reduce chance of person from suffering heart attack.

Unlike yummy junk food snacks this one has necessary nutrients such as unsaturated fats, protein, vitamins and minerals.

'Our study results further support the growing body of research that tree nuts, such as walnuts, can reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases,' according to Dr Michael Falk, one of the authors from the Life Sciences Research Organization.

Researchers said that walnuts are the only nut that gives a large amount of 2.5g per ounce serving of alpha-linolenic (ALA), a plant based form of omega-3.

Dr Falk and his team found out that walnuts are effective way to lower total cholesterol, LDL, so-called 'bad' cholesterol, and ApoB, the main protein found in LDL cholesterol.

Their findings show eating at least two serving or two ounce of walnuts per day has obviously a stronger effect to total cholesterol and LDL levels. It also lowers risk of heart disease in persons with type-2 diabetes.

The researchers carry out an organized evaluation and meta-analysis of 61 controlled trials before arriving at their conclusion. For about 1,301 articles reviewed, 61 experiments meet up the eligibility criteria for Dr Falk's analysis - incorporating 2,582 people.

Two decades of experiment and research proves that walnuts may really decrease cardiovascular risk aspects by decreasing LDL by nine to 16 percent and diastolic blood pressure by 2-3mmHg2.

Their study also explains three nuts can trim down total cholesterol, while increasing level of HDL, or 'good' cholesterol, reducing inflammation and improving arterial function.

The study is published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. It also confirms that aside from providing omega-3s, walnuts also a suitable source of fiber and protein
