Expect to be doing a whole lot more binge watching in the near future. During the UBS Media Conference held in New York City yesterday, Netflix' Chief Content Officer said that the company plans to double its slate of original programming next year.
This year, the online streaming giant counted 15 shows on its roster. The list includes well known mainstays like House of Cards and Orange is the New Black as well as successful new comers like Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Narcos, and Master of None. The company also has a growing partnership with Marvel in the works as 2015 saw the release of both Daredevil and Jessica Jones.
For 2016, Netflix is aiming to expand its catalog of original series to 31. The company also has 10 feature films in production or about to be released, 30 kids programs, as well as a dozen documentaries and 10 stand-up specials. Sarandos assured those in attendance that the rapid uptick in production would have no effect on the quality.
"It's not just a lot of volume. This is quality stuff," he said.
Some of the new projects in the pipeline include more Marvel shows like The Defenders, Iron Fist and Luke Cage.
On the non-comic book front, the network has a Baz Luhrmann created musical series in the works called 'The Get Down' which follows a group of teenagers traversing Studio 54-era New York City.
Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz also has a new series in development called Flaked, which reunites him with Bluth family-alum Will Arnett.
The eight-episode comedy, set in the insular world of Venice, California, centers on a self-appointed guru who falls for the object of his best friend's fascination. Arnett plays Chip, a man doing his "honest best to stay one step ahead of his own lies," reads Variety's description of the show.
