J.J. Abrams Explains Why Princess Leia Won't Use The Force In 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'

Princess Leia is undoubtedly one of the most powerful characters in 'Star Wars' and in pop culture. In addition to being a princess, she also happens to be the twin sister of Luke Skywalker and the daughter of Anakin Skywalker aka Darth Vader. Like her brother and father, Leia, who is played by Carrie Fisher, has also proven to be Force-sensitive when Luke called out for her help in 'The Empire Strikes Back.'

As powerful as she may be, it seems like Leia has decided not to use the Force in the original 'Star Wars' trilogy and didn't even try to get Jedi training in 'The Force Awakens.' The big question is: Why did Leia not make use of the Force in her?

'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' director J.J Abrams recently spoke to IGN, where he gave an excellent explanation of Princess Leia's decision.

"It was a great question, and one that we talked about quite a bit, even with Carrie," Abrams said. "Why did she not take advantage of this natural Force strength that this character had? One of the answers was that it was simply a choice that she made, that her decision to run the Rebellion, and ultimately this Resistance, and consider herself a General, as opposed to a Jedi. It was simply a choice that she took."

It sure sounds like Leia realized that she could help more people by working with the Resistance and becoming a General.

Carrie Fisher seems to carry some of Leia's strength and spunk. The actress recently reacted to the Slave Leia controversy in the best way possible.

"The father who flipped out about it, 'What am I going to tell my kid about why she's in that outfit?' Tell them that a giant slug captured me and forced me to wear that stupid outfit, and then I killed him because I didn't like it. And then I took it off. Backstage," Fisher said.
