Will McDonald's Stage a Comeback With a 'Secret Menu'?

McDonald's is allegedly testing a "secret menu" breakfast item in select restaurants in the United States, the Independent UK reports.

Known as Chicken McGriddle, the item has been rumored to the fast food giant's first step to increasing its profits after it went down in 2015. It is said to be in its test phase at 11 branches in Ohio until March 2016.

The Chicken McGriddle is composed of a McChicken patty placed in between two syrupy McGriddle pancake slices the way a burger is made. The pancake slice is the same McGriddle patty the chain has been selling for years.

Should the move prove true, it will not be the first time McDonald's offered chicken meals for breakfast. According to Fool.com, in many states, the McChicken patty can be ordered as a southern-style biscuit sandwich.

McDonald's testing the Chicken McGriddle among consumers may also be an attempt at capitalizing on the recent trend of eating chicken for breakfast. Chick-fil-A and Bojangles already have successes with their own chicken-based breakfast menus with other chains to closely follow suit.

McDonald's has repeatedly denied the existence of a secret menu despite uploaded photos of the said item on many social media accounts.

McDonald's has been struggling on the financial front in the past two years but recent numbers show that it is regaining its status among many foodie circles. In the holiday quarter of 2015, the company had a 5.7% year-over-year earnings gain for its US restaurants, the first time the quarter's earnings did not dip since 2012.

Reuters has reported that after a decade of negotiations, McDonald's will finally enter Kazakhstan, a nation of 17 million people and the biggest market in Central Asia. It will face stiff competition from other international chains like KFC and Burger King, which have a more established presence in the country.
